  3. N-1-3-011.10, "CUNET: Caribbean Academic, Scientific and Technological

  6. CUNET is a project dedicated to the establishment of a cooperative
  7. network among countries in the Caribbean Region, and to encourage the
  8. development of their respective national networks.
  9.  
  10. The First Caribbean Academic and Scientific Network Seminar/Workshop,
  11. celebrated during the month of September 1991, was organized by the
  12. Organization of American (OAS), the Corporation for the Academic,
  13. Scientific and Research Network of Puerto Rico (CRACIN), and the
  14. University of Puerto Rico (UPR).  The participants represented
  15. institutions from member states of the OAS, mostly English-speaking
  16. countries, and the Dominican Republic.  During this seminar
  17. participants were trained to install and administrate nodes which
  18. would mainly serve for electronic mail and file transfer.
  19. Participating countries at this first encounter included: Antigua,
  20. Barbados, Bahamas, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, Puerto Rico,
  21. Dominican Republic, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Suriname, and
  22. Trinidad and Tobago.  However, other countries have been invited to
  23. participate in this effort.

  25. A visitation program was initiated to provide extra support to
  26. participating countries.  Also, high speed modems are being provided
  27. to countries with a reasonable amount of traffic.  Currently,
  28. information exchange is done via UUCP over high-speed dial-up lines.
